Pop Tarts is a collective of musicians from the city delivering an eclectic mix of Pop , retro, combined with a bit of soul, jazz and Rnb ! All members of the lineup being session musicians, they have vast knowledge of playing various styles of music and will deliver in this gig at Blue Frog an exciting set of covers spanning across multiple genres of music. Pop Tarts is Mana Dhanraj on Vocals, Ashwin Shekhar on drums, Joshua Costa on Keys, Himanshu Gautam on Guitars and Ravi Nair on Bass duties.
Mana’s musical journey began with her father. At a very young age he would play her jazz and encourage her to sing along and form an appreciation for the style. Thus the seeds were sown for what was to become an obsession with music in the years to come. Her first steps into learning were through hindustani classical. She studied under Sri. Krishnamurthy, Smt. Aditi Upadhya, and then her prime student Priya Purushothaman for a number of years. During her co During her college years at the Srishti School of Art an Design she performed in a hindustani music ensemble, “Sunaad” lead by Smt. Aditi Upadhya and Tarakini. She also composed and arranged music for her college plays and installations. Her experiments wi Her experiments with sound design also began around this time, working with musicians like Sharik Hassan and Prashanth Davidson to put together a sound installation about Indian women and their insecurities in public spaces.
Joshua has been playing keyboards and piano from the age of 8. Having studied pop keyboard very initially made him open to playing across various styles such as Pop, Rock and more recently having forayed into Jazz and Blues. Joshua plays with various bands and artists. To name a few, Colin D’Cruz and Jazz Junction, The Gerard Machado Network, Riverman Band, The Beer Puppets, retro setup The Butterfingers , & Classic Wild playing Classic Rock and some progressive rock. Off late he is also part of an interesting music project fusing bollywood classics with the elements of jazz and R&B called MaJa. His musical tastes range across Jazz, Funk and Blues to Rock n Roll and other retro stuff. He Says “I love to play anything where my creative gene gets activated and I am able to improvise and experiment. My goal is to have fun with music be it at a studio, stage or wherever !!“. He has two albums of his Own (Always there and Aikya) produced by Colin D’Cruz under the JazzGoa label. He listens to a lot of variety because he believes what you hear is what comes out of you, Stuff he listens to includes Keith Jarret, Chick Corea, More recent New Age jazz artists such as Manuel Valera, Robert Glasper, and also contemporary pop such as ABBA, Carpenters, Beatles, Sting etc.
Started playing guitar at the age of 17, learning under his brothers. He Later joined Sri Sathya Sai Mirpuri College of Music, Puttaparthi, where he learnt Hindustani classical music(vocals and tabla) and learnt the principles of correct practice. He says learning Hindustani Music has surely helped him improve his ears. He then came to Bangalore and pursued western classical guitar. Himanshu has developed the ability to play different genres of music over a period of time. He is experimental and looks forward to all kind of music. Apart from being a determined teacher for almost four years he also plays with his band called Riot (An Experimental Soul-Funk band from Bangalore influenced by all kinds of crazy music) and he is also actively involved in studio session playing, recording . He is a dedicated musician with a good sense of time management.
Pure Energy and Letting go is what happens when Ravi gets on stage on a good day. It varies from time to time, but being able to relate to people and experiencing the same joy is probably what a “GOOD GIG” means to him.He started singing as a kid training under his father and mother, played a few instruments and over time started getting better at various styles of music. He had the opportunity of learning under some really influential and amazing musicians who are still at the “Top of their Game” at Swarnabhoomi Academy Of Music”. Since then he has played and toured in multiple cities along with multiple bands. He currently plays for “Sulfurcloud”, “Rainburn”, “Out Of Office” and “White Mug” and also does session work.
